Economics graduate student Arpita Banerjee-Chakraborty has won a 2009-10 dissertation year fellowship. Her dissertation, titled "Trade Reforms and Indian Informal Sector," proposes a novel theoretical model to show the reason behind stagnant informal sector wages in the face of growing demand in India for informal (unorganized) workers.

Economics Department Weekly Seminars

The Economics Department sponsors a weekly seminar series in which UNH faculty, visiting faculty and advanced graduate students present original research papers and receive feedback. UNH prof, other experts: Recovery not yet under way

Ross Gittell, a professor at the Whittemore School of Business and Economics at the University of New Hampshire, said he doesn't see anything that suggests the recession will end soon.

"There are not many strong signs of recovery," he wrote in an e-mail to the newspaper. "The main (what might be viewed as) positive indicators are moderation in the declines in employment in New Hampshire and the New England region. There are also some indications that the residential housing market is near its bottom, with increasing sales activity."
